Mamme by Jessica George (2023). The British-Ghanaian protagonist of this moving, deeply original novel will have you in stitches (of laughter) and tears.
Desertion by Abdulrazak Gurnah (2005). You won't have to read long to understand why this novel is widely, critically acclaimed. It tackles themes as timeless as forbidden love affairs while grappling with the legacy of colonialism. If you're a stylist, allow yourself to be swept away by the beautiful prose.
Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney (2021). The third novel of the beloved if not aesthetically divisive millennial Irish author, Sally Rooney. This novel differs from the others in that it reads like a very slightly veiled fictional account of Rooney's life after she became a writer-celebrity.
